He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Zabel and Cora Retzlaff Zabel; and his siblings, Ione Kreckler, Marcella Schoenick, Ray and Rolland Zabel.
He is survived by: his wife Jeanne Clayton; his sons, Guy Zabel (Carrie) of Horicon and Bruce Zabel of Waupun; his grandchildren, Steven (Ryan), Tabatha, Max and Rachel; and his close friend Nancy Zimmerman. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
