He was predeceased by: his parents, John Schmitt and Martha Schmitt (Pape); his brothers, Lawrence, George, Earl and Bill; and his son David.

He is survived by: his wife Carol Scheid; his children, Bob, Carol, Dane, Deb Schmitt, Judi Schmitt and Mark Schmitt (Kristin); his grandchildren, Judy (Manny), Laura, Breanna, Max and Nathan; and his great grandchildren, Kheelyn, Charles, Onika, Luca and Sonora.
