He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Smith and Elaine Smith (Esser); his brother Greg Smith; his siblings-in-law, Linda Smith, Dennis Olig and Joseph Olig; and his parents-in-law, Leander and Anna Mae Olig.

He is survived by: his wife Linda Ann Olig; his daughters, Rebecca Sewell (Peter) and Amanda Perera (Ravi); his grandchildren, Henry Sewell and Eleanor Sewell; his siblings, Tim Smith (Sue), Steve Smith (Mary Beulow), Brad Smith, Chris Smith, Bruce Smith (Jenny Markwiese), Todd Smith (Diane) and Pam Marcoe (Tom); his siblings-in-law, Richard Olig (Linda), Gary Olig (Monica), Lee Olig (Lorrie), Pam Petrie (Larry) and Mona Behlke (Robert); and his caregivers, Pat, Dr. Sanyal and Dr. Schug. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
