He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Nielson and Christine Nielson (Reetz); his spouse Shirley Bogdanski; his granddaughter Beth VanErt; and his siblings, Helen, Verneta, Albert and Duane.

He is survived by: his children, Mary Stolowski, Karen Gehrke, Dan Nielson (Ilde), Mark Nielson (Yvonne), Bill Nielson (Pollyanna Soukup) and Kelly Nielson (Camille); and his siblings, Daniel Nielson (Joanne), Margaret Palmer and Rosemary Hintz. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.
