He was predeceased by: his parents, Glen Sweeney and Leona Sweeney (Etheridge); his former wife Lulu Bell; his son Jim Thompson; and his granddaughters, Angela Meinhardt and Tiffany Sweeney.
He is survived by: his wife Lela; his children, Sherry Williams (Tim), Debra (Robert), Jeffrey Sweeney (Becky Schaller), Valerie Border (Robert) and Phillip Sweeney (Angella Pierce); and his siblings, Joyce Young, Doris Fox and Russell Sweeney. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren.
