He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Mark Wegner and Gladys Wegner (Koeppe). He is survived by: his wife Carol (Leininger); his children, James Wegner (Jennifer) of Stevens Point, Jeffrey'Jeff' Wegner (Ann) of Cedar Grove and Janette Thompson (Troy) of Bonduel; and his grandchildren, Tyler, Evan, Cylee, McKenna, Hailee, Emery and Braedy.

In honor of Richard's ministry in Lutheran Education, memorials may be directed to the North Wisconsin District's Labor of Love Million Dollar campaign.
