He was predeceased by: his parents, Gustave Schmitt and Lavina Schmitt (Hein); his grandson Joshua Schmitt; his great grandchild Braylee Terlaan; his siblings, Allegra Glimme (Llewellyn), Delrose Dockendorf (Bernie), Lenore Ryan and Duane Schmitt (Ellen); his sister-in-law Dee Harmon; and his nephews, Jeffrey, Dean, Ed, Joe and Hank.

He is survived by: his wife Gerri; his children, Ken "Gus" Schmitt (Sandi), Kristy Schmitt, Gregg Schmitt (Christine), Dawn Schmitt (Tim Cummings) and Sharon Schmitt; his grandchildren, Michael Bouchie, Colt Watson, Jessica Holcomb, Brittany Daniels, Sharri Waldron, Chay Schmitt, Gabriel Schmitt, Emma McIntyre and Grayson Schmitt; his great grandchildren, Jayde, Andre, Louie and Addison; his brother Kent Schmitt; and his brother-in-law Dale Ryan. He is also survived by nephews, nieces and other family members.
