Sibyl M. Beirne Obituary
PORTAGE – Sibyl M Beirne, 92, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Columbia Healthcare Center in Wyocena, WI. She was born August 2, 1932, in Ettrick, WI, to Pyrl and Rose Smith. She graduated from Gale-Ettrick High School and received her bookkeeping degree from Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI. She married Ronald Beirne in August 1954 in Ettrick, WI. They were married 37 years, until his death in 1991. She worked at Community Loan and Finance in La Crosse, WI while he attended college. His teaching career brought them to Portage where they raised their family.
She was the heart and soul of our family. She ran the large household, baking and preparing home cooked meals every night. There was nothing better than her cinnamon rolls, bread, bars and cookies all made from scratch. She enjoyed dancing, dining out and spending time with friends, especially the Turtles. Over the years she worked at Portage Plastics, Laing Dentistry, Complete Comfort and Community Action. After retirement there was always a child, grandchild, or great grandchild hanging out at Grandma Sib's house.
Mom, we love and will miss you. We cherish all the crazy memories.
She is survived by her seven children; Jennifer (Jim) Austin, Pamela (Norm Hurd) Beirne; Joan (Ken) Shanks; Patrick; Jeanne (Don) Stuckert; Gregory (Anna); and Peggy (Rob) Simonson. Seventeen grandchildren: Louis (Ana Wurtz), Kevin (Kylie Bridenhagen) and Jayne (Adam Bortz) Hurd; Stuart (Ope Daramola-Shanks), Douglas (Miranda Homan-Shanks) and Martin (Michelle) Shanks; Barry Beirne, Thi Lea, and Michelle Hurtado; Theresa (Andrew Kaplan) Nagy, Lauren (Kevin Schreck) Nagy; Jessica (Scott) Anthes, Payton Beirne, Mallory (Josh) Inglett; Ashley (Ty) Gumz; Kalynn (Dyllan Jerome) Denman, Madysen (Christian Peterson) O'Neill. Nineteen great grandchildren and counting: Aubree Austin, Lennon, Reya, and Ada Hurd, Maxwell Daramola-Shanks; Meredith, Desmond, and Hazel Shanks; Leighton and Tyson Shanks; Ella Sibyl, Ainsley Schreck; Olivia and Samantha Anthes, Landon and Vivian Gumz; Greyson and Kenadi Jerome; and Matthew Peterson. Also survived by two sisters-in-law: Betty Smith and Marie Deja. Sibyl is preceded in death by her parents and husband, grandson Zachary Austin, brothers Bud (Gladys), Allan, Richard, and her beloved sister Madeline (Stewart) Crogan; Brother and Sister-in-Laws: William (Sadie) Beirne, Charlotte (Paul) Bishop; Rolland (Sid) Beirne and Lorin Beirne.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Patel and Columbia County Healthcare Center for their care of mom. Special thanks to Angie and Toni our mom's favorite CNA's. To Mary, mom's roommate, she was so grateful for your friendship.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. - noon on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the St. Mary of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portage. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow with Father Randy Timmerman officiating. Burial will follow the service at St Mary Catholic Cemetery in Portage. A luncheon will be served afterwards in the basement of St. Mary of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
