He was predeceased by: his brother Harland; and his sister-in-law Erlinda Estabillo. He is survived by: his wife Narcisa; his brother Conway of Arlington; and his nieces and nephews, Reynaldo, Larry of Saudi Arabia, Margarita Huff of Arizona, Faye Elaine Baker of Onalaska and Jay Scott Schmidt. He is also survived by several cousins and friends.

Donald R. Schmidt was joined to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health via body donation program.
