He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Sr. Michalak and Anna Michalak (Gandurski); and his siblings-in-law, John Szaflarski and Rita Michalak. He is survived by: his wife Judy Michalak (Hlavacek); his children, Jim Michalak (Mary Beth) and Jodi Rohaley (Ron); his grandsons, Christopher and Anthony Rohaley; his stepgrandsons, Matthew, Andrew and Daniel Tabaczynski; and his siblings, Mary Szaflarski, Tony Michalak (Fran), John Michalak and Rich Michalak (Anne). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
