He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Fred Gafner and Olga Gafner (Griel); his son Fred; his wife Doris Deal; his children, Eric Gafner (Mari) of San Francisco and Heather Hoogester (Scott) of Batavia; his grandchildren, Nathan Pompe (Anna), Kenzie Hoogester (Cole) and Tyler Hoogester (Blaire); his siblings-in-law, Victoria Farmer (Rodney), Shirley Deal and Tom Deal (Cathy); his granddaughters, Darby and Sydney Shanaberger; and his daughter Holly Shanaberger. He was also cherished by other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Fred's name to be put towards Alzheimers and bladder cancer research.
