He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Bates and Hilda Bates (Hess); his wife Maxine Cavadini; and his siblings, Kathleen Rolph, James, Victor and Lawrence Bates.
He is survived by: his children, Lynette Jirschele (Mark) of Marshfield, Nancy Schoenfeldt (Mark) of Wausau, Wisconsin, John Bates (Kathy) of Eau Claire, Robert Bates of La Crosse and David Bates (Jackie) of Onalaska, Wisconsin; and his grandchildren, Paul Bates (Desiree), Jenny Jackson (Steve), Jake Jirschele (Dannielle), Jillian Hurst (Joe), Ashlee Kramer (Isaiah), Chelsee Dinamarca, Brandon Schoenfeldt (Alicia) and Lauren Smith (Matt). He is also survived by 16 greatgrandchildren.
Visitation was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church (1301 Main St, Onalaska, WI 54650). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
