He was predeceased by: his parents, Fredrick Sweeney and Sadie Siegal; his sisters, Helen Covert and Elizabeth "Betty" Prokop; and his son Steven Sweeney.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce (Prahl); and his children, David Sweeney (Laura), Patrick Sweeney, Michael (Kris) and Merry Jo Sweeney. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
