He was predeceased by: his wife Alyce Mae Karstaedt; his stepmother Myrtle Schanke (Miller); his grandson Gregory Schanke; his brothers, Elmer Schanke (Helen) and Eugene Schanke; and his stepsiblings, Gloria Parr (Jack) and Ronald Kraus (Marion).
He is survived by: his children, Wayne Schanke (Joan) of New Holstein, Nancy Casper (Gene) of Kiel and Thomas Schanke (Tamara) of Elkhart Lake; his grandchildren, Michael Schanke (Sarah), Eric Casper (Amanda), Chad Casper (Sethyn), Shane Schanke, Jenna Rabe (Nic) and Jarett Schanke; his great grandchildren, Amelia Schanke, Roman, Violet Casper, Zoey-Mae, Ainsley Rabe, Ryden and Lettie Casper; his siblings, Donald Schanke (Joan) and Elaine McAloon; and his stepsister Sandy Anastase.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his name for Zion Lutheran Church, New Holstein.
