He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Smith and Marie Smith (Schmieder); and his siblings, Charles, Robert, Patricia and Mary.

He is survived by: his wife Margaret "Peggy" Patten; and his siblings, Richard Smith (Joanne), Gary Smith, Bruce Smith, Kathleen Klein and Maxine Johnson. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
