He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Sowatzke and Virginia Lang; his stepfather Roy Repta; and his brother John Repta. He is survived by: his wife Debra A. Dhein; his sons, Tyler Sowatzke (Erin) and Jake Sowatzke (Tara Howard); his grandchildren, Avery and Hudson Sowatzke; his sisters, Donna Ebert (Dennis), Deb Repta and Karla Repta; and his pets, Graycie and Penny.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Wisconsin State Firefighters Association.
