He was predeceased by: his parents, Horst O. Schaefer and Anneliese F. Schaefer (Ertmer); and his brothers, Reinhold and Charlie Schaefer. He is survived by: his sisters, Doris Schaefer of Scottsdale, AZ, Linda Carter (Scott) and Susanne Wollschlager of Necedah; and his children, Adam Schaefer of Georgia and Lydia Schaefer of North Carolina. He is also survived by several nieces & nephews.
