Darwin J. Portz of Vernon, passed away suddenly and peacefully on July 7, 2024 surrounded by his entire loving family. Born on January 29, 1950 to Donald Portz and Florence Portz-Klussendorf. Devoted and loving husband of Linda (nee Schelain) for 53 years; ever caring dad to Scott (Denise), Brian (Tracey) and Betsy (Rick) Stoll Jr.; loving and proud grandpa of BreAnna and Bryce Portz, Brenden Portz, Brooke and Trent Stoll Jr.; dog whisperer to Lola, Hank, Bane and Bucky. He is further survived by his sisters JoAnne Babbitt, Sandy Portz, sisters-in-laws Beth (Rob) Knoelke and Laurel (Dave) McCaleb and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Darwin was preceded in death by his parents Donald Portz and Florence Portz-Klussendorf, father-in-law Warren Schelain and mother-in-law Betty Schelain, his brothers Donald (Joyce) Portz and David (Donna) Portz.
Darwin graduated from Waukesha South in 1968 and was the lead guitar player for a band called the "Vacant Lot" during his High School years. He spent over 20 years as a lithographer with WA Krueger Co., Ringier America and Sells Printing. He worked many years for ProHealth Care in central services and also as a transportation driver. Darwin proudly served Pewaukee and Big Bend/Vernon as a volunteer firefighter. In his retirement years he worked at the Mukwonago YMCA as a greeter and delighted many children as the Santa for their Christmas parties. He later got his dream job at Morning Star Golfers Club, where he was a ranger/starter.
He was a dedicated Wisconsin sports fan to the Brewers, Badgers and Bucks and was proud to be a Packer season ticket holder. But most of all, he was an exceptional super fan to his grandsons and granddaughters watching them play baseball, football, soccer, volleyball, hockey and track.
Darwin always looked forward to deer hunting in November with his sons and nephews and he loved to fish with his sons and grandsons. And of course, he loved to play golf! For 10+ years, Darwin and Linda looked forward to their annual trip to Door County with their group of great friends. Vacations took them on cruises and travels to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Arizona, Alaska and many other memorable trips.
Darwin was a friend to all and had a gentle and kindhearted way about him that everyone loved.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hake and the entire staff at the ProHealth Care Cancer Center for the care and compassion they gave Darwin.
