He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Kahl and Marion Kahl (Miller); his son Daniel Kahl; his sister-in-law Louise Knudtson; and also, Milo, Lydia Knudtson and Clifford.

He is survived by: his wife Helen Knudtson; his daughters, Nancy Balbach (Craig) and Catherine Woller (Timothy); his grandchildren, Amanda White (Keith), Christopher Balbach (Emilee), Spencer (Kayla), Stuart (Reilly), Raymond and Christopher Woller; his great grandchild Harrison White; his siblings, Cynthia Moy (Norbert) and Dennis Kahl (Cindy); and his siblings-in-law, Howard Knudtson (Jean), James (Dana), Kathy Brock (Gerry) and Linda Ovadal (Ralph). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines at this time, social distancing is required and face masks are strongly encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be gifted in John's name to Mt. Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church or Saba, International.
