He was predeceased by: his parents, Marion Roberts and Ruby Roberts (Freeman); his siblings, Virginia Knudson, Betty Hume, Darlene Bowers (Donald), Jim Roberts (Anita), Joanne Seils and Jane Leach (Lawrence); and his stepson Eric Waage.

He is survived by: his former spouse Jean Johnson Roberts; his wife Shirley Roberts (Waage); his son Farms; his friend Bill Finster; his close friend Missy; his children, Jody Roberts (Mary) and Judy Vaughn (Dave); his stepdaughter Brenda Larson (Floyd); his brother Jack Roberts (Betty); his grandchildren, Mike Vaughn (Barb), D. J. Vaughn, Kelly Cusick and Charity Bryant (DaMon); and his close friend Blake Good. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, one great-great-, grandchild, his nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family for distribution to numerous causes in Joe's memory.
