He was predeceased by: his parents, Bertha M. Borkenhagen and William F. Borkenhagen; his wife Lysabeth; and his sister Lois Church. He is survived by: his children, Lynne Schroeder (Rick), William Borkenhagen (Tammy), Tamarah Kent (Fletcher) and Andrea Elwyn (Gary); and his former wife Renay Carmichael.
While in St. Francis, by earning a National Science Foundation grant, Phil discovered the material producing "wet strength" in paper goods at Marquette University laboratories.
