He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Folsom Hillis and Eunice Rosabelle Hillis (Garvoille); his brother Miles Hillis; and his son John Hillis Jr.. He is survived by: his children, Mike, Ron Hillis (Lisa) and Tia Peterson (Eric); and his grandchildren, Sarah, Sydney Peterson, Jordan (Stephanie) and Chris Hillis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare and the Pines Assisted Living in Prairie du Sac.
