He was predeceased by: his adoptive parents, Marion Dickson and Mary Dickson (Fitzner); his sister Beth Ann Auman (Dean); his former wife Phyllis Dickson; his son James M. Dickson II; and his stepson Patrick Shier.
He is survived by: his wife Patricia Dickson; his children, Debbie Bynum (Larry), Tina, Lisa Brown and Mark Dickson (Wendy); and his stepdaughter Brenda (Jeff). He is also survived by nieces, nephews and siblings, along with his biological extended family.
