Richard W. Schliewe Obituary
Dick was born June 6, 1940 to Gerhard and Margaret (née Weege) Schliewe in Ixonia, WI. Passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2024 at the age of 84.
He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in Ixonia and was confirmed on April 11, 1954. He attended Watertown High School and graduated class of 1958. He played tub in high school and was a member of the Oconomowoc Legion Band from 1958-1997.
In June of 1967, he married Barbara Laughton. He is survived by his daughter Annette Graves of Oconomowoc, his son Jason Schliewe of West Salem, and his grandson Jack Graves of Oconomowoc. Further survived by his siblings Margo (Dennis) Cullen of Virginia, Lucy Mueller of Fort Atkinson, Gene Schliewe of Utah, David (Bonnie) of Watertown, his sisters-in-law Virginia (Terry), Colleen (Tom), special friend Kimberly Nickel, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his father Gerhard, his mother Margaret, wife Barbara, sister Merry Kohn, brothers Tom and Terry, and his grandson Nicholas Graves.
Dick worked on his dad's farm until enlisting in the US Air Force in November 1959. After basic training, he played in the Air Force bands in Texas and Japan for 2 years and then transferred into Medical Administration- Chanute Field III. Discharged November 1963. Returned to farming for a short time and then worked as an investigator for Retail Credit Co, and started part time as City Assessor for City of Lake Mills. Went to full time City Assessor of Beaver Dam and later City Assessor for the City of Oconomowoc. Later County Assessor of Kenosha County for two years.
Moved back to Oconomowoc and did private appraisal and assessment work for small villages and sold real estate. In 1987 he was offered an appraiser position with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) until retirement on December 31, 2005. Served on the city of Oconomowoc Assessment Board of Review for several years.
Dick was a member of the Oconomowoc American Legion Post 91. Served as Adjutant and Finance Officers positions for several years. A life member of Vietnam Veterans and past treasurer of Oconomowoc VVA. A past member of Oconomowoc Chamber of Commerce and was an original member and chair of the Ambassador Club. Member of OASC and served on the board of directors and was president of the board of directors for one year.
Dick was a life member of the Lions Club International with having had membership in the Oconomowoc, Kenosha Noon, and Stone Bank Lions Clubs. He's held the most club offices and committees, zone chairman district governor, foundation director, and state convention chair, active member 40 years (as of 5/1/2024) until passing. Has 4 Melvin Jones recognitions.
Services are still pending at this time, but it will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with a burial at Glenview Memorial Gardens in Ixonia with military honors.
