He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick Downey and Alice Coles Downey; and his siblings, Loretta, Tom and Jerry.
He is survived by: his wife Kathleen Kleine; his sister Yvonne Jenn; his son Timothy Downey (Lisa); his grandchildren, Erin and Emily Kumm (Jon); his son Daniel Downey (Jacqueline); his grandchild Jordan (Samantha); his great grandchildren, Abigail Rosario (Vladimir) and Michael Downey; his siblings, Mary, Tim, Alice, Geraldine, Teresa, Rose Marie, Mark and Mike; and also, Meagan, Patrick and Lauran. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and many friends.
He was sent on partial scholarship from the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to Nursing School at Alexian Brothers in Chicago.
