He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Backhaus and Ida Backhaus (Neumeyer); his wife Genevieve Schmidt; and his great grandchild Marcelena. He is survived by: his children, Mary (Don Shimon) of Manitowoc, Ann (Bari Bolle) of Manitowoc, Theresa Griesbach of Manitowoc, Genevieve "Genny" Leider of Manitowoc, Ruth Backhaus of Manitowoc, Joseph (Barbara Backhaus), Newton, John (Deborah Backhaus), Alan (Diane Backhaus), Francis (Tammy Backhaus), Green Bay, Patrick (Amy Backhaus), Michael (Annette Backhaus) and Mark (Wendy Backhaus); his brother James Backus; and his sisters-in-law, Sylvia Hodzinski and Harriet Mrotek. He is also survived by 40 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren.
