He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrew Merkel and Katherine Merkel (Cooke); his sister Carol; and his parents-in-law, John and Violet DeLeeuw.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara DeLeeuw; his children, John Merkel (Deborah), Scott Merkel (Kimberly), Jim Merkel (Kimberly) and Susan Merkel-LaRock (Darboy); his grandchildren, Samantha, Christian, Aaron, Sawyer, Hudson, Hunter and Peyton; his brothers, Jim DeLeeuw (Julie) and Jerry DeLeeuw (Lee); and his friends, Dick and Marie Thull. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Due to the Covid pandemic, we ask anyone attending to please wear a mask and observe social distancing protocols.
