He is survived by: his wife Irene; his children, Mary Marren (John) of Chicago, IL, Darlene Balgord (Gary), Madison, Joseph Mertens (Kelly), Steven Mertens (Terri) and Anthony Mertens (Wendy); his grandchildren, Mary Eileen Marren, Brian Marren (McKayle), JJ Marren (Lauren Orth), Sarah Stran (Matt), Elizabeth Balgord (Cameron Colburn), Ben Balgord (Megan), Joshua Mertens (Jessica), Jacob Mertens (Katrina), Jolene Blankenship (Sam) and David Mertens; his great grandchildren, Harper Roy, Jackson Mertens, Juliana Mertens, Jaden Mertens, Jonathan Mertens, Cora Balgord and Beckett Balgord; and his siblings, Clemens Mertens (Pat) and Kitty Shumaker (Ed).
