He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Jack" and Corinne Kernan (Woodbeck); his wife Janet Kernan; his brother-in-law Ron Sargent; his daughter-in-law Susie Quint-Kernan; and his stepson Steven Michels.
He is survived by: his children, Kurtis Kernan of Fort Atkinson and Kim Ley (Lyle) of Fort Atkinson; his grandchildren, Shannon Kernan, Kirsten and Logan Ley; his daughter Judith Thayer Kelchner (Robert); his sister Patricia "Pat" Sargent; his nephews, Bart Sargent (Sandy) and Brett Sargent; and his stepson Scott Michels (Tina) of Virginia Beach.
