He was predeceased by: his parents, John Albert Whelan and Frances Angeline Whelan; and his brother John August Whelan. He is survived by: his wife Christine Ann Whelan; his children, Rebecca Jean (James Blakemore), Joshua "Josh" David (Catrina "Cat" Ahlbach), Jennifer "Jen" Christine (Rafael "Rafa") and Theodore "Ted" Robert (Faith Hess Whelan); his grandchildren, Rowan, Nils, Arden and Sofia; and his sister Lucille Charmaine Serwa (John Serwa). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hartland Area Food Pantry.
