He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Heesen and Dorothy Heesen; his wife Grace J. Kirsch; his brothers-in-law, Dick Navin, Fred Berndt and Mike Lackas; his mother-in-law Edna Kirsch (Schulz); and his siblings-in-law, Carol Wolf (Kirsch), Donald Kirsch and Jim Kirsch Sr..

He is survived by: his children, Troy Heesen (Joachim Kempin), Wendy DuBois (Wes) and Heather Rettler (Ben); his grandchildren, Xavier, Isiah, Cameron, Clayton, Calvin and Kenzie; and his sisters, Caroline Navin, Nancy Berndt and Mary Jane Lackas. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Peter Catholic Church Building Endowment.

“I was so sorry to hear about Dick's passing. I worked for him at BCBS. I left in 1984. I think of him as being the best boss I ever had. I learned so much from him. When I left, I moved to Colorado. He wrote the best letter of recommendation for me. Eventually I moved to MN and worked for BCBS of MN. At one point BCBS of WI decided to set up an office on the west side of the state. Dick interviewed me. I gave him with that same letter. We had a good laugh over it. I'm happy to have known him.”
