He was predeceased by: his parents, Joyce Abel (Schultz) and Walter Abel; and his spouse Margilea Swan. He is survived by: his daughters, Jennifer Webb (Daniel) and Susan Ellingsen (Donald); his grandchildren, Reece Ellingsen and Erica Webb; his siblings, Roger Abel (Alice) and Kathleen Thompson (Kenneth); and his parents-in-law, Philip and Sandra Swan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
