He was predeceased by: his parents, William Schmitz and Florence Schmitz (Freund); his wife Julitta Abler; his children, David Schmitz and Catherine Schmitz; his daughter-in-law Lynn Schmitz; his parents-in-law, William and Rose Abler; his brothers, Clarence Schmitz (Elfrieda), Louie Schmitz and Orlando Schmitz; and his siblings-in-law, Ruth, Wilfred Abler (Marie), Rita Diederichs (Melvin), Bernice Diederichs, Roger Abler (Mary), Donald Abler and Robert Ballwanz.
He is survived by: his sons, James "Jim" Schmitz (Jane) of Malone, Robert "Bob" Schmitz (Kay Grady) of Sheboygan, Steve Schmitz (Nancy) of Mount Calvary and Ken Schmitz (Kaye) of Fond du Lac; his daughter-in-law Virginia "Ginny" Schmitz of Malone; his grandchildren, Mark, Jeff, Daniel Schmitz, Carrie Schwoerer, Stephanie Olive, Ryan Schmitz, Bill Schmitz, Michelle Wilson, Eric Schmitz, Craig, Kim, Kelsey Schmitz, Noah Schmitz, Brianne Stahmann and Becky Schmitz; his brother Gerald Schmitz (Bernice) of St. Peter; and his siblings-in-law, Lillian Schmitz, Lorraine Ballwanz, Marian Freund (Ron), Diana Abler, Kathy Kempf (Al) and Gerald Diederichs. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in his name.
