She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Frederick C. Gernhardt II and Mary Magdelene Hilgers (Marie); her grandmother Hilgers'; her uncle Tom Hilgers; her husband Harold W. Smage; her grandson Phil; her daughter-in-law Sharilyn; her children, Terry Smage Johnson, Robin Smage (Linda), Harold Smage, Jr. (Corrine) and Noel Smage (Sharilyn); her grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Garette, Michael, Genelle, Mitchell Johnson, David, Phillip, Larissa (Torkelson), Patrick Smage (Hannah), Erin (Heiser) and Brenda Smage; her siblings, Carole, Frederick and Ralph; and her grandson-in-law Deric Hahn. She was also cherished by 24 great-grandchildren.
