He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Schmidt and Anna Schmidt (Nikolai); his wife Barbara; his daughter Kristine Gerhart; and his great grandchild Jacob Schmidt.

He is survived by: his significant other Peggy Cleveland; his sons, Brian Schmidt and Ken Schmidt; his stepdaughter Laurie HIlliker (Kurtis); and his siblings, Harry Schmidt and Marilyn Price (Frank). He is also survived by six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews.
