Edward A. Kubicek Obituary

Edward "Butch" Albert Kubicek, a devoted husband, brilliant mind, and loving soul, passed away peacefully at home in Dousman, Wisconsin, surrounded by his family. He was 97 years old.

Born in Albany, Minnesota, and raised in Mellen, Wisconsin, Edward led a remarkable life defined by faith, humility, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones.

A veteran of World War II, Edward served with the 88th Infantry Division, also known as the "Blue Devils.". After his military service, he embarked on a career as a mechanical design engineer which spanned over four decades. Ed's contributions to engineering were extraordinary. He played a key role in designing the guidance systems for the Titan II missiles, which later propelled the Gemini space program. His work extended to the Saturn V rockets that carried astronauts to the moon, the lunar rovers (Moon Buggies), and the navigation systems of the early B-52 bombers and XM-1 Abrams Army Tanks. Edward held patents in his name and worked for renowned companies, including Ladish/Allis-Chalmers and Delphi Oak Creek, a division of General Motors.

Despite his groundbreaking achievements, Edward remained modest to a fault, always placing family first. He was united in marriage to his beloved LaVonne Schwindt on August 15, 1953, and their bond remained unshakable as he cared for her lovingly during her battle with end-stage dementia.

Ed's life was one of constant curiosity and creativity. He loved inventing, building and refurbishing—whether it was a design for a mechanical heart, a child proof cap, a solar powered engine, converting a school bus into a camper or transforming a cabin into a modern two-bedroom home. Outside of work, he was also an avid hunter, fisherman, and a formidable player of cribbage and sheepshead.

A devout Christian, Edward served as an elder and usher in his church. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and guided his actions, always leading with kindness and love.

Ed's legacy is beautifully reflected in the large family he leaves behind. He was the proud father of Jim Kubicek, Jon Kubicek, Marc Kubicek (LouAnn), Keith Kubicek (Katherine), Todd Kubicek (Ginny), Joel Kubicek (Cynde), Rebecca Adsit (Steve), Chris Kubicek (Chrissy), and Robbin Becco (Jim). He was also a beloved grandfather to 31 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 15 great-grandchildren.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, LaVonne "Vonnie" Schwindt; his siblings Anthony, Albert, Elizabeth, Rosalia, Roman, and John; and his sister-in-law, Donna (Russell) Olson.

He is survived by his cherished family and countless friends who will remember his humor, humility, and brilliance. While his absence leaves an irreplaceable void, we take comfort in knowing Edward is now reunited with the love of his life, Vonnie, and they are together once more.

A celebration of Edward's incredible life will be held starting with a visitation on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church (410 W. Veteran's Way, Mukwonago) from 9:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will follow.

Burial will be held on Monday, January 6, at Southern Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove at 10 AM with Military Honors.

Edward's legacy of love, innovation, and faith will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
