He was predeceased by: his brothers, Phillip Gheem and Daniel Van Gheem; his sisters-in-law, Gayle Van Gheem and Mabel Peterson; and his parents-in-law, Orin Peterson and Johanna Peterson.

He is survived by: his spouse Mary Ann Peterson; his children, John Van Gheem (Susan), Paul Van Gheem (Sherry), Mark Van Gheem (Chris) and Lisa Angotti (Jason); his grandchildren, Andrew Van Gheem, Jennifer Blattner (Joel), Sarah Johannsen (Travis), Kathryn Nicholas (Anthony), Jacqueline Van Gheem, Benjamin Van Gheem (Jennifer), Samantha Johnson (Alex) and Marysa Van Gheem; his great grandchildren, Lily, Wyatt, Audrey Blattner, Henry Johannsen and Claire Nicholas; his siblings, Anne Peterson (Louis) and Nicholas Van Gheem (Connie); his sister-in-law Delores Van Gheem; his nephew Godchildren; and also, Louis Peterson (Anne), Donald Peterson, Gordon Peterson (Mary), Orin Peterson (Jean), Nancy Jansen (James), Judy Gonnering (Edward), Betty Gonnering (Frank) and Joanne Helke (Gail).
