He was loved and cherished by many people including: his mother Lillian Richter; his sons, Rev. Steven Apfel (Stacy) of Hobart, WI and Scott Apfel (Stacy) of Oswego, NY; his grandchildren, Kristen Lizzio (Dominic) of Liverpool, NY and Michael Apfel (Maria) of Liverpool, NY; his stepgrandson Brent Richardson (Karen) of Rochester, NY.; his brother-in-law Kenneth Overland of Sturgeon Bay; his wife Lois (Overland); his parents-in-law, Karl and Marie Overland; his siblings, Francis Kenyan and Virginia "Babe" Biela; and his sister-in-law Carol Overland. He was also cherished by five great grandsons and two step-great grandchildren.
A memorial fund in Bernie's name has been established at Ascension Lutheran Church, Green Bay.
