He was predeceased by: his parents, Edwin and Mary Ellen Horstmeyer (Russell); his siblings, Russ Horstmeyer, Glen Horstmeyer and Ruth Gjermo; and his brother-in-law Harold Abey Sr..

He is survived by: his wife Janice E. Abey; his children, Douglas Horstmeyer (Christine), David Horstmeyer (Shannon) and Heidi Petersen (Chad); his sister Frannie Hubred (Mel); and his sister-in-law Mary Abey. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines at this time, only 50 people, on a rotating basis, are allowed into the funeral home at one time.
