He was predeceased by: his parents, John Bates and Rosella Bates (Hirst); and his brother Jim Bates. He is survived by: his former wife Linda Bates; his children, Justin Bates (Kat) and Andrea Fitzgerald (Jeff); his grandchildren, Jack Fitzgerald and Lauren Fitzgerald; and his sisters, Jackie Ruf, Ginny Jennings and Barb Sickenberger (Marty).
