He was predeceased by: his parents, Ray Mayer and Magdalene Mayer (Walter); his son James Mayer Jr.; his siblings, Virginia Marek (Richard), Gerald (Evelyn), Robert (Jane), Donald (Donna) and Ronald Mayer (Marie); and his brothers-in-law, James Schueble and Delvin Boos.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Gehl; his daughters, Roxanne Bronoske (Randy), Linda Marten (David) and Deborah Miller (Mike Schemenauer); his daughter-in-law Karin Mayer; his grandchildren, Sabrina Reiter, Crystal Beam (Jason), Kevin Bronoske (Lindy), Nicole Turner (Eric), Kimberly Marten, Douglas Miller (Erica), Kristina Mayer (Kristie) and Thomas Mayer (Brittany); his great grandchildren, Colton, Keira, Caiden Turner, Shelby, Riley Baldeshwiler, Selah, Symphony Reiter, Jordon Beam, Kylie Bronoske, Mason Lyons, Callum and Wren Miller; his stepgrandchildren, Tony and Melanie Hurlburt; and his sisters, Lorraine Schueble, Bernadine Grill (Benedict) and Anita Boos. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
