He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Eleanor; his children, Eleanor, Nancy, Herman and Margaret; his parents, William Herman Carl Hinz and Ilma Weipking Rathke Hinz; and his siblings, Elroy Hinz, Marion Hinz Hanschke, Luther "Lutz" Rathke, Ilma Rathke Tews, Lucille Rathke Habich and Gertrude Rathke Rooney.
