He was predeceased by: his parents, James B. Hitts and Blanche I. Hitts (Durham); his stepfather Rudy Amerling; his wife Laura Hitts; his siblings, Ron, Ellwood, Russ (Bob Hitts) and Mary (Beatrice Zimmerman); his granddaughter Tammy Colburn; and his sons-in-law, Donald Schofield II and Kenny Colburn.

He is survived by: his children, Linda Hitts (Evan Hill), Kenny Hitts and Julie Hitts (Dave Markham); his daughter-in-law Sarah Hitts; his grandchildren, Amanda, Kristie, Kenny "Buddy", Diana, Donald, Darrin, Derek, Kenny, Melissa and Adam; and his close friend Joyce Colburn. He is also survived by grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.
