He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward and Alma; his children, Martin, John and Mary; and his granddaughter Kendra.

He is survived by: his wife Doris; and his sons, Robert Louis (Karen R.) and James Allan Schmiechen. He is also survived by 12 other grandchildren, many great grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.
