Matthew Murphy wrote a sympathy message

“My family and I send our deepest condolences for your loss. From the time I first met Martin, he was always engaging, accommodating, and generous. I never met a more thoughtful man! In rugby, none have a more respected role than the referee. As a founding member of our local youth rugby club, he brought a treasure of rugby knowledge and always shared so that players and coaches alike could understand. Esteemed, yet modest at times, he served the club, players, and families with dedication.”

“My thoughts are with you both. I will mourn the loss of Martin, a friend & great man that gave back to youth via his love of sport. My fondest memories, the pleasure I got on Saturday when I saw his smiling face & got my obligatory rugby hug. Every encounter I was left with a warm feeling that made my day just that much better. The pic, Martin with Ben & my daughter Olivia when they were in Elementary, as I loved coaching with Martin who taught me so much about the spirit of the game.”

Ryan McDougall wrote a sympathy message

“Dear Sal & Ben, Martin's friendship is one of the most cherished things I have and will ever have. I feel a profound sense of loss, a loss i can't wrap my head around, a loss I don't want to accept. Every time we spoke, he made me a better person, he enriched my life like very few people could. I was incredibly lucky to know and love him. Fortunately during this very dark time, we have many beautiful memories to console us and have his memory live on. Love you Martin, Sal and Ben.”

Kurt Federspiel wrote a comment

“Sal, Ben... Watching Newcastle today without texting or emailing Martin was harder than I thought. I remember sitting at Ryan's place watching Bafana Bafana Zar play Mexico in the WC Opener, and we were all cheering on The Boys. While I hadn't seen Martin in years, he was part of every weekend when Newcastle was on the Tele, and we would talk a lot of crap about Tottenham. My routine is forever broken. I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish you peace and love always.”
