He was predeceased by: his son Dennis Ackers. He is survived by: his daughters, Candy Yarbrough and Sandra Pfarr (Craig). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Named the 2009 ECMO "Baby Blood" Donor of the Year, Fred made 190 donations, providing nearly 25 gallons of a rare type of newborn-safe blood.
