He is survived by: his wife Ruth Alice Neff; his sons, Fred Smethers of Sedro-Woolley, Ed Smethers of Olathe and Ned Smethers of Seymour; his parents, Howard Smethers and Marjory Smethers; and his sister Pat Chrisco of Olathe.
