He was predeceased by: his wife Jean; his son Michael; his parents, Aloysius Schmitt and Frances Schmitt; his siblings, Elizabeth Frost (Betty) and Siena Schmitt O. P. (Peggy); and his grandchildren, Michael A. Schmitt and Michael D. Fishel.

He is survived by: his significant other Lee Maddock. He is also survived by His parents and some of his siblings worked at the family business and lived with their children.
