He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Wheat and Roy Wheat Sr.; and his siblings, Betty Wheat-Boyd and Bill Wheat. He is survived by: his daughters, Cindy Gender and Susie Courtright (John) of Moses Lake; his wife Dee; his son Jay Wheat; his siblings, Roberta Wheat-Taipale, Larry Wheat of Moses Lake and Gerry Wheat-Eagle of Bothell; and his grandchildren, Jarrett Wheat, Scot Courtright, Thomas Courtright, Aubrey Gender Babst, Jake Courtright, Preston Gender and Tyler Courtright. He is also survived by his seven great grandchildren.
In 2018 the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration presented Buck with The Wright Brother's "Master Pilot" Award for dedicated service, technical expertise, professionalism, and many outstanding contributions to further aviation safety.
