He was predeceased by: his parents, Hugo J. Schmidt and Hilda Schmidt; and his siblings, Elizabeth Ann Schmidt, Alvin Hugo Schmidt (Ruby) and Robert Eugene Schmidt (Norma).

He is survived by: his friend Melva Grube; his wife Melva Mae Grube; his brothers-in-law, Alvin Petersen of Syracuse, NE and Gene Fortune of Lincoln, NE.; his children, Mark Schmidt (Rhonda) of Ellensburg, WA., Marcia Pace (William Pace) of Ellensburg, WA. and Andrew Schmidt (Michell) of Ellensburg, WA.; and his sisters-in-law, Arlene Fortune of Lincoln, NE and Phyllis Bates (Steve) of LeMars, IA.. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the William and Melva Schmidt Memorial Scholarship at Central Washington University.
